Bryophyte communities across the ecological succession process in the Caxiuanã National Forest, Pará, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
TAKASHIMA-OLIVEIRA,TÁSSIA T.G.; MEDEIROS,PRISCILA S. DE; TAVARES-MARTINS,ANA CLÁUDIA C..
Abstract Bryophytes play an important role in the process of ecological succession: conditioning the environment favourably for the emergence of subsequent groups. The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution of bryophyte communities in a cronossequence in the Caxiuanã National Forest, Pará, Brazil. To this end, biological material was collected in forest remnants with different successional stages based on regeneration age: Stage I (0 – 10 years), Stage II (10 - 25), Stage III (> 25) and Stage IV (primary forests). Density, richness and composition of species were compared between successional stages and the occurrence of possible indicator-species was investigated. The identified taxa were also classified by guilds of tolerance to...

Diversity and structure of the tree community of a fragment of tropical secondary forest of the brazilian Atlantic Forest domain 15 and 40 years after logging Rev. Bras. Bot.
Oliveira Filho,Ary T.; Carvalho,Douglas A.; Vilela,Enivanis A.; Curi,Nilton; Fontes,Marco Aurélio L..
Two adjacent tracts of tropical secondary forest, situated in Itambé do Mato Dentro, south-eastern Brazil, which had been regenerating for 15 and 40 years after clearing, were compared with the purpose of detecting differences in species diversity and composition, species guild composition (regeneration, stratification and dispersion), and stand structure. Four and three 1,125 m² plots laid on the 15- and 40-year-old stands, respectively, sampled 2,430 trees with diameter at the base of the stem > 5 cm. The number of species (S = 199) was high for this forest type and significantly higher for the older stand. Tree density was significantly higher in the younger stand, particularly for smaller trees, whereas the two stands did not differ in both basal...

Fluctuating asymmetry of and herbivory on Poincianella pyramidalis (Tul.) L.P. Queiroz (Fabaceae) in pasture and secondary tropical dry forest Acta Botanica
Ribeiro,Viviane Andrade; Silva,Rosineide Nascimento da; Sousa-Souto,Leandro; Neves,Frederico de Siqueira.
Plants subjected to stressful environments tend to be more asymmetric with reduced defenses and are therefore more vulnerable to herbivory. This study investigates the relationship between herbivory and fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in Poincianella pyramidalis in two contrasting habitat types in the Brazilian caatinga (shrublands). We tested the following hypotheses: that FA occurs in P. pyramidalis; that FA of P. pyramidalis leaves is greater in individuals located in pasture than in those located in secondary tropical dry forest; that herbivory by insects (leaf chewers and leaf miners) increases in parallel with increases in the level of FA; and that herbivory is more common in pasture than in secondary tropical dry forest. In each of the two environments,...

Although bigleaf mahogany [Swietenia macrophylla King (Meliaceae)] is the premier timber species of Latin America, its exploitation is unsustainable because of a pattern of local depletion and shifting supply. We surveyed experts on the status of mahogany in Bolivia and Peru, the world's past and present largest exporters. Bolivia no longer has commercially viable mahogany (trees > 60 cm diameter at breast height) across 79% of its range. In Peru, mahogany's range has shrunk by 50%, and, within a decade, a further 28% will be logged out. Approximately 15% of the mahogany range in these two countries is protected, but low densities and illegal logging mean that this overestimates the extent of mahogany under protection. The international community...

Spatial distribution and regeneration strategies of the main forest species on Robinson Crusoe Island RChHN
VARGAS,RODRIGO; CUEVAS,JAIME G; LE QUESNE,CARLOS; REIF,ALBERT; BANNISTER,JAN.
We describe the structure of the endemic Robinson Crusoe Island forest. We analyse the regeneration strategies of the trees: Myrceugenia fernandeziana, Fagara mayu, and Drimys confertifolia. Inventories were taken on nearly intact montane forest remnants with emphasis on spatial patterns by using Ripley's K (t) function. We hypothesized that i) ornithochorous and barochorous species should show a clumped regeneration, as a consequence of seed rain; ii) nurse effect, if present, should also contribute to a clustered pattern; iii) clustering should disappear at more developed life-stages due to self-thinning; iv) if gaps influence tree mortality and regeneration, these will present grouped patterns. Myrceugenia fernandeziana was the most abundant tree...

Spatial patterns of tree community dynamics are detectable in a small (4 ha) and disturbed fragment of the Brazilian Atlantic forest Acta Botanica
Machado,Evandro Luiz Mendonça; Oliveira-Filho,Ary Teixeira de.
The dynamics of the tree community of a fragment of tropical semideciduous forest was investigated in south-eastern Brazil. Surveys were carried out in 2000 and 2005 in 29 20 × 20 m plots. The main purpose was to assess the possibility of detecting spatial patterns of dynamics that could be related to the heterogeneity of both the environment and disturbance history in a small forest area (4.0 ha). Rates of mortality and recruitment of trees and gain and loss of basal area were obtained for the whole sample, four pre-defined soil habitats, diameter classes and twelve tree populations. The tree community was rather unstable in the period, once mortality rates surpassed recruitment rates and loss rates of basal area surpassed gain rates all-over the area...

The importance of forest disturbance for the recruitment of the large arborescent palm Attalea maripa in a seasonally-dry Amazonian forest Biota Neotropica
Salm,Rodolfo.
The hypothesis that forest disturbance is important for the recruitment of the large arborescent palms Attalea maripa was tested with a natural experiment in the Pinkaití site (7º 46'S; 51º 57'W), a seasonally-dry Amazonian forest. A 8,000 m long trail, that crosses, in its lower half, an open forest along the Pinkaití stream bottomlands and, on its upper half, a dense forest on a hill, was divided in 160 0.15 ha (50x30 m) sampling units. At each unit, adult palms were counted and percentage of canopy openness was measured with a concave spherical densiometer. The palms were nearly five times more abundant at the bottomlands, whose forest had a canopy 14.8% more open than that of the hill; supporting the hypothesis that disturbance is important for their...

The seed bank of a gallery forest in Southeastern Brazil BABT
Grombone-Guaratini,Maria Tereza; Leitão Filho,Hermógenes de Freitas; Kageyama,Paulo Yoshio.
The soil seed bank was studied in a gallery forest in Southeastern Brazil. Samples were collected from edge to edge along transects perpendicular to the river during the wet (December, 1990) and dry (August, 1991) seasons. The number of seeds found in the seed bank samples was greater in the dry season than in the wet season indicating that there was important variation in the seed stocks in these two periods. The similarity values between the seed bank and the community composition were low. The high density of weed species might be reflecting forest fragmentation and indicating a degree of perturbation.

The soil seed bank during Atlantic Forest regeneration in Southeast Brazil BJB
BAIDER,C.; TABARELLI,M.; MANTOVANI,W..
A survey was conducted to determine the density and species composition of viable seeds buried in four stands of a tropical montane forest at Parque Estadual Intervales, Brazil. The objective was to understand: (1) how numbers and composition of the soil seed bank change as the forest regrows, and (2) how such changes affect the species available for regeneration if forests of different ages are cut down. In each forest stand (5, 18, 27-yr-old and a mature forest), 57 soil samples were collected (0-2.5 and 2.5-5 cm deep). Viable seed density of herbaceous species ranged between 11,003 seeds. m-2 (5-yr-old vegetation) and 482 (mature forest), and between 25 (5-yr-old vegetation) and 389 seeds. m-2 (mature forest) for woody plant species in the 0-5 cm soil...
